Microsoft just made its most ambitious Copilot feature available to everyone

Copilot Cowork — the agentic layer inside Microsoft 365 that plans and executes a task rather than just handing back a draft — went generally available worldwide in June, according to Microsoft's own release notes. The distinction Microsoft is drawing matters: instead of asking Copilot to help write something and then finishing the work yourself, you define the task and Cowork carries it through to a completed deliverable, grounded in whatever the business already has in SharePoint, Outlook, and the rest of the Microsoft 365 graph.

For IT teams, the more relevant detail might be how it's governed rather than what it does. Cowork bills on usage rather than a flat seat price, and Microsoft added a Cost Management Dashboard to the admin center specifically so administrators can watch credit consumption and cap spend before it becomes a surprise line item. It also inherits the same Purview controls — sensitivity labels, audit logging, eDiscovery — that already apply to regular Copilot activity, so it isn't a separate governance problem to build from scratch.

Smaller organizations have mostly watched this rollout from the sidelines, since most of the Copilot news cycle over the past year has skewed enterprise. That's shifting: Microsoft's July partner announcements introduced "Copilot in 30," a 25-user, 30-day Microsoft 365 Copilot Business trial built specifically for organizations under 300 employees, arriving through the CSP channel starting August 1, 2026.

Worth noting separately: Microsoft also rolled out an admin policy setting that lets organizations require watermarks on AI-generated video and audio content created inside Microsoft 365. It's a small feature, but it's a signal of where this is heading — as agentic tools produce more finished output on their own, being able to show what was AI-generated and what wasn't is becoming a standard control, not an afterthought.
